We were over in Acomb for a birthday celebration, setting up in a local tennis club, just off one of the main residential roads. Around 70 guests for this one, Simons’ 40th! It was a proper mix of family and friends, and exactly the kind of event that suits a hog roast in Acomb.

We get the same questions at almost every event — how long it’s been cooking, how many people it feeds, and when we’ll be ready to serve. It’s all part of it really. People enjoy seeing it done properly rather than food just appearing from a kitchen.
Serve time was set for 7:30 pm, and we got straight into it. Fresh rolls ready, stuffing warm, apple sauce heated through and carving started straight from the hog. The crackling didn’t last long, it never does, and there were plenty of comments straight away about how tender the pork was.
Service moved exactly how it should — steady, no queues building up, just a constant flow of guests coming through. That’s the advantage with this kind of setup. Everyone gets fed quickly without it feeling rushed.
A few guests were back for seconds not long after, which is always a good sign. With around 70 people, we had everyone served within about 30–35 minutes.
Once service was done, everything stayed clean and organised, and pack down was quick. Being a straightforward hog roast setup with no sides, we were loaded up and away without any disruption to the rest of the night.
